Spring Bear Hunting
This week we had a full lodge with one group from up north in Alaska, one from Montana and one group from Oregon. A lot of different types of hunters but they all did quite well. One group focused on hunting the shorelines and they end up with two bears. Another group focused on the clear cuts and they got two bears. The last group focused on hunting areas in lower elevations that had more grass growing and they finished out with three bears. Two of the bears this week were over 7 foot and three bears had 19+ inch skulls. The bears really popped out this week. Every year is different but with the heavy snow over the winter and cool weather this spring the bears have been slow to emerge. The grass seems to have grown about 10 inches this week and that means the bears have been feeding. There isn't a lot to eat in the spring so good green grass is like candy for big bears. Wil Askew of Pursue the Outdoors was up he got his bear the first full day he hunted.
One of our groups saw the first fawn of the season that we've seen. That means the bears will be responding to predator calls much better from here on out. That group also found a set of four point buck sheds on one of the back roads.
We were out in the big boat fishing for halibut and this big bear walked out on the beach. He is rubbed but he sure is round. We nicknamed him poodle bear because he looks like he got a poodle hair cut. Maybe we can find him next year before he gets rubbed.
Two new groups arrived today. I'll let you know how they do.
